Playarr

One library, every screen

Fully native clients with full product parity and performance, not one web view wrapped seven times, and one versioned API contract behind all of them. Features degrade only where a platform cannot support them. Several are still developer previews, and none is on an app store yet. Each is labelled below.

Platform by platform

Web

Available

Any modern browser

TypeScript and React, sharing its component library with the television shells.

  • Works in any current desktop or mobile browser.
  • This is also the route used on Hisense televisions, through the built-in browser.
  • Nothing to install and nothing to update.

Android

Available

Phones, tablets, Android TV, Google TV

Native Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, responsive across phone, tablet and television layouts.

  • One signed universal package covers phones, tablets, Android TV and Google TV.
  • The television build includes a self-update action that checks for a newer published version.
  • Installed directly rather than through a store, so you will need to permit installation from the browser or use adb.

Hisense VIDAA

Available · Experimental install

VIDAA televisions

The hosted web app, opened in the television browser.

  • The browser route is the reliable one and needs nothing unusual.
  • A launcher tile is possible on some firmware but is experimental, and you choose and control the method yourself.
  • There is no official VIDAA store distribution.

Roku

Available · Experimental install

Roku players and Roku TV

Native SceneGraph using the platform video node.

  • Requires enabling Developer Mode on the device, which involves a remote-control key sequence and a reboot.
  • The package is uploaded through the device’s own web installer.
  • Developer-mode side-loads are removed by a factory reset and are not a store installation.

LG webOS

Available · Experimental install

LG televisions

The shared television web application in an LG platform shell.

  • No pre-built package is published; you build it from the repository.
  • Installation goes through LG Developer Mode and the ares-install tool.
  • Developer Mode sessions expire and need periodic renewal on the television.

Samsung Tizen

Available · Experimental install

Samsung televisions

The shared television web application with a native platform playback adapter.

  • No pre-built package is published; you build it from the repository.
  • Samsung requires the package to be signed with a certificate you generate in Tizen Studio.
  • Installation goes over sdb with the television in developer mode.

Apple

Coming soon

iPhone, iPad, Apple TV

Native SwiftUI for iPhone, iPad and Apple TV.

  • The source is in the repository and its tests run against a simulator.
  • There is no installable build and no distribution route yet.
  • Until then, the hosted web app works on iPhone and iPad in Safari.

HarmonyOS

Coming soon

Huawei phones, tablets, Vision TVs

Native ArkTS, in development.

  • No installable build exists yet.
  • The hosted web app is the route to use on Huawei devices in the meantime, in whichever browser is available.

Step-by-step instructions for each route live inthe client setup guide.

Signing in without typing a password on a remote

Televisions are terrible at text entry, so Playarr does not ask them to be good at it. A television shows a short code, you approve it from a phone or laptop, and the device is signed in, the standard device-code flow, served by your own server.

The hosted Playarr service can also broker the very first handshake between an app and a server it has never seen. That short-lived record holds only the device secret, the server addresses you chose, and a single-use device code. It never receives a password, a browser token, or a refresh token, and it expires within minutes.

Once linked, the app talks to your server directly. Nothing routes through the hosted service afterwards.
